Distributed Energy Resources

On-site energy assets generating revenue in energy markets

WHAT ARE DERs?

  • Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are energy technologies located at or near a facility that can generate, store, or manage electricity.
  • Examples include generators, solar panels, battery storage systems, HVAC systems, and smart building technologies. While each asset may be small individually, when coordinated together they can provide valuable flexibility to the electric grid.
  • When aggregated through Virtual Power Plant platforms, these assets can participate in energy markets and earn revenue for businesses.

Common DER Technologies

  •  Backup Generators
Often installed for reliability, these assets can provide temporary grid support during peak demand events.
  • Solar Panels
On-site solar generation can contribute to distributed energy participation.
  • Battery Storage
Battery systems store energy and can discharge during grid events.
  • HVAC Systems
Heating and cooling systems can be adjusted temporarily to reduce peak electricity demand.
  • Smart Building Systems
Lighting, controls, and building automation systems can help manage flexible loads.

How DERs Create Value

  • When connected to Virtual Power Plant platforms, DERs can participate in programs that support grid reliability during periods of high demand.
  • Businesses are compensated for making their energy flexibility available and responding during rare grid events.
  • This allows facilities to generate additional revenue from assets they already own.

Connecting DERs To Energy Markets

  • Grid Avec works with leading market platforms and demand response providers to connect distributed assets to energy markets.
  • Through partnerships with providers such as Voltus, CPower, and Leap, DERs can be enrolled in programs that compensate businesses for supporting grid stability.
  • Grid Avec manages the evaluation, enrollment, and coordination process to ensure participation occurs safely and within operational limits.
